Sex Offender Evaluation Services
Sexual
offender assessments are completed by trained and
experienced mental health professionals. Almost always,
sexual offender assessments are completed at the request
of the Court or corrections. Assessments may occur during
the presentence phase of a criminal proceeding, after
sentencing has already occurred, or after an offender has
been released from prison. On the rare occasion, an assessment is conducted at the
request of an individual. Sexual offender assessments are
aimed at four major questions:
1)
What is the likelihood the
individual will sexually reoffend?
2)
What are the most salient
factors that contributed to the sexual offending?
3)
Is there evidence of deviant
sexual interest?
4)
What, if any, sexual
offender specific treatment is indicated?
5)
Are there mental health or
chemical dependency problems that need to be addressed?
These questions are answered with clinical
interviews of the offender; review of Court and
corrections documentation about the assault; collateral
interviews with family members, corrections staff, or
others; review of past mental health, chemical dependency,
or sexual offender treatment records; recidivism risk
assessment instruments; and psychological testing.
